Mission of Still Life Canada
Still Life Canada is a non-profit society whose mission is to build a community of support for anyone affected by stillbirth and neonatal death and to promote research to reduce both. We acknowledge death as a dimension of life and we respect grief as a continuing bond.
It is from this perspective that we accompany others in their discovery of healthy grieving practices, build a caring and compassionate community, initiate personal and professional development networks and provide opportunities for dialogue among parents, families and community.
To build communities of support for anyone affected by stillbirth and neonatal death through education, research and promotion of healthy grieving practices. To promote activities to reduce stillbirth and neonatal death.
- Families experiencing stillbirth and neonatal death will be supported in their grief so that they are able to meaningfully participate within communities while continuing to integrate their grief into their lives.
- Preventable deaths will be eliminated.
- Anyone serving bereaved families will be able to integrate grief into their practice and compassionately attend to the bereaved.
Why the name Still Life Canada?
A still life painting, though depicting objects that are still, can be vibrant, colourful, and full of life. When a loved one dies, that person remains alive within us. In this way, Still Life Canada is a legacy of love.
The hummingbird was chosen as Still Life Canada’s symbol for its grace, beauty and appearance of stillness. Its wings move at incredible speeds when hovering, giving the watcher the impression of it being still. Though babies are born still or die soon after birth, we at Still Life Canada see their potential to make an impact in the world through the actions of those who honour their memories.
